Originated in Central Africa, it is a hunting dog with an especial fame of sight hound. It is adored by the dog-lovers on account of its unique quality of staying silent and not barking. It has a distinct larynx which helps it produce yodel-like sound instead of barking. This yodel-like sound is called barroo.

Appearance of Basenji
It is a short-haired, erected eared, and small in size dog. It eyes are almond-shaped whereas the tail is curled generally upward. The forehead is wrinkled in the old age and in the young age both.
A shrieking child dog
Due to the unusual larynx, it produces such sounds which resemble the shrieking of a child. Therefore, it has been named as the shrieking dog as well.
